home sweet home!

“There’s no place like home…”

Firstly, take pictures from the car with caution. 🙂 I was stopped in traffic, for the record! When I pulled into Chicago on a 14-lane highway to the city of my motherland’s skyline…I had to capture it! I’ve missed home! As calm as the country can be, I’m a city girl at heart! I’ve left Mr. Prevention and Miss Lily back in Columbus…just me and the fam this weekend (and next weekend when they come to see our new house and watch some football!)

Yesterday I worked nearly a full day, drove 5 1/2 hours to Chicago, and met my parents out for their town’s weekly “progressive dinner”, as I call it. For the “progressive dinner” you buy vouchers for participating restaurants where you can try a small portion of different foods. We tried (and shared!) everything from calamari to falafel to brownie sundaes. I left with a small food baby, as Juno’s friend referred to them. (Great movie, by the way!) I should’ve and would’ve taken pictures, but I was too wrapped up in family fun…sorry! 😀

Originally, I had plans to run while my parents were at their “progressive dinner” but when I got into town a few minutes ahead of schedule, they dragged me out…which didn’t take much effort on their part. 😉 When we got home at 9pm, I knew I still needed to squeeze in my run (ugggh!!!). I was thinking of Biz and my 101 Days of Summer Challenge goal! I need to stay on track!!

I headed out, staying close to my parent’s house.

Running safety: I carried my ID, stayed within 2 blocks of home, ran on the best lit sides of the streets, gave my family a time at which I would be back by, and did not wear head phones. I typically don’t run after dark, so I finished a quick 1.51 miles in 14:40 — nothing spectacular, but it felt great…surprisingly!

Question: Do you workout outdoors after dark? Do you take any safety precautions? Any fun weekend plans?

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

P.S. Thanks for all your workout song recommendations! I love them and will be adding them to my mix! 😀

Be well,

  1. Glad you make it to Chicago safely!
So you consider Columbus the country??? I consider it a big city! Ok, maybe not BIG, but you know…definitely a city. Although maybe where you are it’s more country? I need to come visit soon! Maybe next OSU game?? Or you and Mark can come over to our place! I hopefully don’t have to work for every game, ugh, that would be just my luck.

Have a great weekend with the fam! Enjoy running the streets of Chicago!

  2. Not that Chi-town is home, but that pic did look wonderful. Where’s the like button?! :). Have a great weekend with family.

Oh Chicago! How I missed you! I usually will only run at night in my small town of Breese around our city park, but when I am in St. Louis, I will stick to morning workouts!

    Have a great weekend!

  4. It always feels good to be home, doesn’t it? I hope you have a wonderful time with your family! The progressive dinner sounds like a lot of fun!

  5. I want to go to Chicago so bad! Enjoy your time there!!! And good job on the safety. LOL I have plenty of chances for car pics in the Atlanta area. I don’t think I can go to my local store without hitting some sort of traffic.

Have a wonderful visit with your family 🙂

I don’t enjoy working out at night, so if I am running inthe dark, which is very rare, it is in the morning.

  7. No nighttime workouts out in the wild for me–I’m a gym girl. Have a fun time with the family!

  8. Welcome back to the city! Hope you have a great weekend! 🙂

  9. I love Chicago! Sounds like a fun night– I’m impressed that you got that run in!

  10. I would love to visit Chicago! I’m on a mission (next summer hopefully) to do a tour of some U.S. cities. Chicago is definitely on my list. Maybe I’ll want to hit Columbus too?

  11. yay, you’re home! enjoy your time. Next time you are in town we need to schedule a meet up!

  12. Great pic of your city! Have fun with your family!
I would go for a walk after dark if I had someone with me, but I doubt alone. Good for you for getting out there though and keeping with your goal!

Have a wonderful time with your family, take lotsa pictures 😀 Glad you’re happy and home after such a long drive, eek! 🙂 I never workout outdoors after dark unless I’m with someone, like a man, haha! Enjoy your weekend, girl!

    Have fun in Chicago!!

I run in the dark in the winter because I really have no choice. But I only stay on main streets that are really well lit, and I do not bring my ipod. I dont go far either, I kind of just run back and forth up and down the street until Im tired. 🙂 Im also considering pepper spray.

  15. I love Chicago! I’m glad you had a nice time with your family.
I typically don’t work out outdoors when it is dark. Come to think of it, I really don’t work out much outside. The Vegas heat makes it kind of hard. It sounds like you did all the right things when going out at night.
    Have a great weekend Nicole!

  16. Way to go on getting a run in AFTER dinner! I cannot run with food in my tummy, which really limits the times I run (morning…). Enjoy Chi-town this weekend!

  17. I’m heading to chi-town next weekend to visit my sister!

  18. You are soooo dedicated! I bet that felt good to stretch your legs after so long in the car, though. Can’t wait to hear how your Chi weekend is! 🙂

  19. Glad you get to enjoy some time with your family! The “progressive dinner” sounds like lots of fun!

I don’t usually run after dark; I think your precautions are good.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  20. Aaww I miss living in Chicago. Nothing like a sunny day in glorious Wrigley, or a snowy day ice skating on Michigan Ave. I hear you on being a city girl. Glad you’re home!!
I don’t run after dark. Unfortunately the short hours of daylight in the winter have me running in the gym mostly, BUT if I get caught in the dark I take my headphones out too. Sometimes it just creeps up. Have a great weekend!

  21. Way to stay on track! I must get some ID someday.

  22. Where in Chicago are you from? I grew up in Naperville and went to grad school at UofC and lived on the South Side – I really miss the city!! Hope you have a fabulous vacation 🙂
